The ShangRing is a disposable, plastic device for male circumcision. The ShangRing consists of two concentric medical grade plastic rings: an inner ring with a silicone band and an outer, hinged ring that acts as a ligature.
The appropriate size is determined by use of a measuring strip. The outer ring is placed outside of the foreskin and locks against the inner ring when snapped together; the distal foreskin is then excised.
The ShangRing is removed after one week and the outer ring locking mechanism is opened using a special tool. A pair of scissors, specifically designed for this purpose, is then used to remove the inner ring.
The ShangRing, a small device, provides an easy, quick, safe, and effective method to perform adult male circumcision.
Compared to conventional adult circumcision, the ShangRing method has a shorter operation time, less blood loss, less pain score, higher appearance satisfaction rate, and a lower complication rate.
The ShangRing adult male circumcision device and procedure was first developed in China. As recent studies have demonstrated that male circumcision reduced the risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection via vaginal intercourse in African countries, the ShangRing circumcision method was first introduced in Africa to fight HIV. Other sexually transmitted diseases such as human papillomavirus infection (HPV) may also be prevented using this device.
The ShangRing is simple, disposable, easy to use, and has good cosmetic results, providing a suture-less circumcision as an alternative to current surgical techniques. The procedure itself is easy to learn and can be performed in 15 minutes.
World Health Organization (WHO) prequalification of medicines is a service provided by the WHO to assess the quality, safety and efficacy of medicinal products. WHO Prequalifcation aims to ensure that diagnostics, medicines, vaccines and immunization-related equipment and devices for high burden diseases meet global standards of quality, safety and efficacy, in order to optimize use of health resources and improve health outcomes.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) examines, tests, and approves a wide range of items for medical use, including drugs and medical appliances. In the simplest terms, “FDA approval” means that the FDA has decided the benefits of the approved item outweigh the potential risks for the item's planned use.
